Fred Couples Golf Shoes: On a mesmerizing Masters Thursday that began with ceremonial drives by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, and ended with a gratifying if not quite triumphal return by Tiger Woods, it was left to Fred Couples and Tom Watson to provide a new wrinkle.
The 50-year-old Fred Couples leads this Masters after one round with a 6-under-par 66 that featured the same weapons he's used to win three Champions Tour events: solid driving, surgical putting. Watson, 60 now, followed up his valiant '09 British Open with a 5-under-par 67, the first time he has broken 70 here since 1987.
[Fred Couples] "Pretty cool, huh?" Steve Stricker chortled. "Those guys can still get the ball out there pretty well, and you need that type of knowledge on this course." Tied with Watson are some prime-time heavyweights like Phil Mickelson, who went eagle-birdie-birdie on 13, 14 and 15, and Lee Westwood. Koreans K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang also shot 67, Choi doing so in the vortex of Woods' group.
